With nine government-sponsored spoken languages, five major people groups and four major religions, Ghana is a diverse nation.

“In Ghana we have so many languages, but because of Christianity we are one,” said Mary Owusu, a journalist for the Ministry of Information. “We know how to forgive easily and forget. That is what is helping us.”

In Accra, it’s common to see shop names reflecting the Christian faith.Sixty-nine percent of all Ghanaians consider themselves Christian.

“Ghanaians consider their country a Christian nation,” Owusu said. And it’s visible all over the country.

Take a bus ride along the coast or walk through the busy downtown streets of Accra, the capital, and Christianity can be seen everywhere.

Brightly painted store signs read, God is with Us Shoes, New Life Photo Lab, King of Kings Beauty Salon.

“Significant Ghanaians are Christians,” said Fred Deegbe, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Accra and general secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana. “A lot have businesses. “We have faith in God,” said Richard, who works in his mom’s store, God’s Appointed Time Fabrics. “Most of my friends believe we can’t do anything but for God. He strengthens us.”

Most importantly Deegbe said that Ghanaians pray for their nation.
