Humbled in Swaziland
“The hardest part about being [in Swaziland] was me,” shares Sara Butler* — a short-term IMB missionary. “I’m naturally bossy and … strong–headed, and I naturally want to do what I want to do.”
“I’ve always known I wanted to go to Africa. God placed that desire in my heart before I even knew God,” Sara Butler* declares. “He called me for this specific purpose.”
Butler traveled to Swaziland through the IMB Hands On program. “Hands On is a college-aged ministry where people can take a semester, go abroad and live in another culture,” says Butler.
“Especially in a culture like Swaziland, it’s all about building relationships,” says Butler. “Sometimes you think, ‘Oh, yeah, I’m living in God’s will. I’m a missionary in Africa!’”
“The hardest part about being [in Swaziland] was me,” shares Butler. “I’m naturally bossy and … strong-headed and I naturally want to do what I want to do.”
“There’s a season of frustration where I didn’t understand why I couldn’t get my own way, and there’s a time of being broken where I was just miserable,” says Butler.
“I didn’t really have an option of not continuing [my ministries],” says Butler. “Thankfully God used those to bring me back to Him and see all over again how merciful He is.”
“Even though I’ve had a lot of difficult times here in Swaziland, I know that it was for my benefit,” says Butler. “I’m so thankful that God loves me enough to discipline me.”
“[God] has a hold of me now, and He’s not letting go,” shares Butler. “I’m just trying to live my life to serve God and to live in His will instead of my own.”
“I think being in Swaziland has taught me that I don’t have to have [my life] all planned … so I will just follow [Jesus] and take it as it goes,” declares Butler.
“When you come to live in another country … it’s just like if you are a person in America. You are still told to go and make disciples,” states Butler.
“I would love to see God change the hearts of the people in Swaziland … and to see Swaziland be a country that knows Jesus is Lord,” says Butler.
