Uprisings in several nations in north and west Africa serve as a world-wide call to prayer for the African church.
Current tensions in Egypt were encouraged by the successful ousting of an authoritarian president who had been in power in Tunisia for 23 years.
“The Church is confused in Egypt – not sure how to pray,” an Egyptian Christian said. “… We don’t know if change is going to be good or worse! [We] need wisdom and revelation to move at this opportune time in strategic prayers led by the Holy Spirit.”
Residents of southern Sudan recently voted to secede from the predominantly Arab and Muslim north. Christians look forward to religious freedom in the new nation, which should be established by July.
In religious disputes in Nigeria, churches have been bombed, pastors killed and the security of Christian workers threatened. Hundreds of Christians have been killed in the last decade.
Once one of West AfricaÕs most prosperous nations, Ivory Coast now faces civil war as incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo refuses to relinquish power to newly-elected President Alassane Ouattara.
