Surviving for Salvation

GOMA, Democratic Republic of the Congo – Rebel soldiers in eastern Congo are being made alive in Christ even in the face of death.

“Fighting face-to-face was hard, to see the government soldier close up and then know that either I was going to die or he was going to die,” a former rebel soldier said of the conflict that’s been raging since the 1990s.

Over five million people have died in the war. But in the midst of towering mortality rates, survivors are coming to know the Lord and making Him known.

One of seven Baptist pastors who minister to rebels in eastern Congo, Rouender Lalers, was sharing his testimony with a rebel when the soldier shared how and why the Lord kept him alive.

“He said that he knew that God had protected him so that he could come to know Jesus Christ and be saved and so that he could share his testimony with others,” Lalers said.

Hundreds of rebels in the Congo no longer take their survival for granted.

“Now we pray for God’s protection,” another former rebel said. “Before we did not know about praying for God to protect us, so I look back and realize that I could have died without Jesus.”

Ngorora Zingolozi was born into a non-Christian family with a surname meaning “disciple of devils,” and says he grew up to be a thief, adulterer and murderer.

One day Zingolozi was committing adultery with another man’s wife when the woman’s husband came home. The adulterous couple hid before Zingolozi soon ran away, fearing the death he would face if his rebel chief caught him.

Zingolozi said when he later heard the Gospel he knew God was keeping him alive so he could be saved.

Upon hearing the Good News Zingolozi repented of his sins and received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Seeing the life of a soldier transform from being a murderer, rapist and thief to being a Christ-follower, teacher of the Gospel and God’s ambassador is fuel for the life-threatening ministry pastors are committed to in the Congo.

Several soldiers voiced their thankfulness to the pastors who told them about God’s love and forgiveness – something they had never heard before.

Ngiriyehe Bosco was captured by rebels as a young boy playing with two brothers from his village. The rebels killed the brothers but Bosco remained alive.

In time Bosco became a rebel soldier known for beating people and stealing from them, but one day he heard the Good News of Jesus Christ.

“With the Gospel I discovered that God loves me, and that is why I didn’t die that day before hearing the Gospel and repenting of my sins,” Bosco said. “I decided to follow Jesus Christ … and will serve Him all my life.”

One of the soldiers believes God can bring peace to the raging storm throughout the Congo.

“God is great and able,” the soldier said. “The only reason I am alive is because God is able.”
